Chapter 24. Research and Other Sponsored Programs
Section 24.2. Research Projects
24.2.6. Project Responsibility
General Information
Once the research project is contractually official (signed by both the University and the sponsor) the principal investigator becomes primarily responsible for all aspects of the project. These generally include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting the research.
- Maintaining a research notebook.
- Proper expenditure of funds.
- Periodic reporting of data and technical progress.
- Management of project personnel.
- Compliance with contractual clauses and maintenance of all aspects of the research within the parameters of the contractual agreement.
- Final project report.
- Disclosure of intellectual property to the Corporate Services office.
Important guidelines to be observed are:
- Spending cannot begin on a project prior to the starting date specified in the agreement.
- All spending under an agreement must be prudent and within the budgetary constraints of the agreement. Significant changes must have prior written approval and endorsement of concerned parties.
- Spending cannot be continued on a project past the ending date specified in the agreement without prior written approval and endorsement of concerned parties.
- Changes cannot be made in the substance of the project without prior written approval and endorsement of concerned parties.
- All requests for changes in the agreement must be made in a timely manner and must have prior written approval and endorsement of the sponsor and the University before any such change may be implemented.
- Any expenses in excess of the grant/contract amount are the responsibilities of the PI and/or department/school/college.
