24.2.5. Contracts/Grants Negotiation

Unrestricted Grant or Gift: A donation that is voluntarily given to the University and the University is not obligated to provide any deliverables of value (such as technical reports, software, hardware) to the donor.

Restricted Grant or Contract: A formal agreement between the University and one or more parties (the sponsoring agency) for the performance of work at a fixed or reimbursable rate. This agreement will be in writing and is enforceable by law. Both parties should be in agreement and will negotiate all contract terms and conditions before the project can be initiated or funds expended. The University is required to provide deliverables (such as technical reports, software, hardware) to the funding parties.

The director of Research and Sponsored Programs is responsible for reviewing the contract to ensure that it conforms with University requirements. The review may include, but is not limited to consultation with the vice president for research, manager of risk management and insurance, the director of technology partnerships, or legal counsel.
