Chapter 18. Occupational Safety and Health Services (OSHS)
Section 18.4. Government Safety, Health, and Environmental Regulations
Waste: Any substance, product, or article that is intended for disposal whether used or unused. Michigan hazardous waste laws apply to any activity involving regulated substances that are inherently waste-like or which constitutes disposal, including transfers outside the University.
The primary sources of waste generated at the University include the sewage system, research and teaching laboratories, classrooms and offices, and facility repair and maintenance activities. Disposal of these wastes is regulated at the federal, state, and local levels. OSHS should be consulted before disposing of any waste into laboratory or floor drains and before disposing of any equipment containing metals or liquids, for example, in gear cases, transformers, or cooling lines. Chemical waste disposal, in particular, is tightly regulated and is coordinated through OSHS. For more detailed information and procedures on waste disposal, contact OSHS.
