Chapter 18. Occupational Safety and Health Services (OSHS)

18.9. Building Safety

Definition

University Building: Any structure owned or leased that is used for University business.


General Information

Facilities Management is responsible for maintaining campus buildings and utilities in a safe condition including exits, hallways, loading docks, and installed fire protection systems.


18.9.1. Construction, Renovation, and Change of Use

Policy

All proposed projects involving changes in use, alterations, construction or additions to buildings or spaces owned or operated by the University shall be approved in writing for adequacy of utilities and Life Safety by Facilities Management and Occupational Safety and Health Services (OSHS) prior to requesting a purchase order, funding, or construction bid proposal. A physical space review will also be conducted by Facilities Management and OSHS before a new or renovated space may be occupied.


Procedure

Prior to any construction, renovation, and change of use to a building or space, do the following:

  1. Notify OSHS by calling 7-2118 or by written memo, of intent as early as possible in the planning stage. As soon as the project is defined and meets applicable Life Safety code requirements, an approved form will be prepared by OSHS.


  2. Notify Facilities Management by calling 7-2303 or by written memo, of intent for their approval.
