Chapter 18. Occupational Safety and Health Services (OSHS)

18.8. Children in the Workplace

Children: Persons under the age of 16.

It is University policy that children under the age of 12 are not permitted in the workplace (such as offices, classrooms, laboratories), except those spaces specifically intended for public use, without the written permission of the department chair, manager, or director. Children under the age of 12 who are not enrolled in a Michigan Tech class or program are not allowed in laboratories at any time. Children under the age of 16 must, at all times, be under the direct supervision of the designated laboratory supervisor while visiting or participating in MTU sponsored activities in laboratories containing hazardous chemicals or equipment.

To bring children into a department office or University building, do the following:

  1. Develop a plan to ensure that the child will be supervised by an adult at all times and will not have access to any laboratory or other hazardous areas.

  2. Submit the plan and request permission from the department head or immediate supervisor.

Adopted: 03/05/2001
