18.6. Respirator Use

Definition

Respirator: Any device intended to control the quality of personal breathing air or to supply personal breathing air, including disposable dust masks.


Policy

All respirator use must be approved in advance by the director of Occupational Safety and Health Services (OSHS) and must comply with the MTU Respiratory Protection Program. Refer to the Web site <http://www.sas.it.mtu.edu/fm/oshs/ respirator_program/index.htm> to view the program in its entirety.


Procedure

To get approval for respirator use, do the following:

  1. Notify the director of OSHS by calling 7-2118 of the need for respiratory protection.


  2. Be prepared to describe the work to be performed, existing control measure, and any exposure measurements or estimates that have been made.
