Chapter 13. Library
Section 13.6. Specialized Services
13.6.3. Interlibrary Loan Service
Definition
Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL): The sharing of resources (borrowing and lending of materials) between libraries that allows individuals to draw upon the resources of distant libraries without the necessity of travel.
Policy
ILL service is available to all faculty, staff, and students of Michigan Technological University. There is normally no charge for this service. If there is a charge, the patron will be notified before the order is placed. The average time required to fill a request is 10-15 days. To arrange for rush orders, or for more information on this service, inquire in the "Document Delivery" office behind the Circulation Desk or refer to the Library's Interlibrary Loan Service Web page.
Procedure
To get a desired book, document, or thesis material from a participating lending library, do the following:
- Complete a Request form that is available near the service points on the first floor-blue forms for books and yellow forms for photocopies or refer to the Library's Web page and click on "Library Forms." Complete a separate form for each item requested.
- Fill out each form as completely as possible to ensure that the proper material will be received.
- If any information about the requested item is obtained from a computer search, attach a printout of the citation to the request form. The printout will expedite processing.
NOTE: There may be a limit to four requests per week at times when the demand for interlibrary loan service is high. When submitting more than four requests, indicate those that are needed first.
- Leave the form with a staff member at the Circulation desk.
- Pick up the material from the Library upon notification of its arrival.
NOTE: Photocopies are usually delivered by the campus mail and need not be returned.
- Materials are to be returned to the Circulation Desk or book drops located across campus.
- Return borrowed materials to the Library within the stipulated loan period, or request a renewal in sufficient time to permit the Library to contact the lending library before the loan period has expired.
NOTE: Since any serious delay in returning or renewing materials could result in the suspension of the Library's borrowing privileges and impacting the needs of all Michigan Tech patrons, not just the delinquent borrower, it is imperative that these materials be returned on time.
