13.4.5. Reference Stack Ranges

Definition

Reference Stacks: Include encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, almanacs, atlases, standards, style manuals, bibliographies, and other reference books used by the various disciplines.

General Information

Some Reference Stack material, such as World Book Encyclopedia, Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, and the World Almanac, are general in coverage; others, such as the Encyclopedia of Psychology, Dictionary of Biological Terms, and the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, are specialized.

Voyager identifies that a book is located in the Reference Collection by the location designation Reference Stacks; some reference books are also located behind the Reference/Information Desk, and are given the location designation Reference Desk.

Reference books are for in-Library use only and should be used in the Reference area. When finished using a reference book, do not reshelve it. Leave it on the table for the staff to reshelve.

Reference Stacks are located behind and next to the Reference/Information Desk on the first floor.

Procedure

To locate material from a Reference Stack, do the following:

  1. Use a computer terminal in the Library and consult Voyager to identify where the desired reference book is located.

  2. Make note of the call number.

  3. Proceed to stacks area and find the desired reference book.

  4. NOTE: If the desired reference book is not on the shelf, check adjacent shelves and nearby study tables, or inquire at the Reference Desk.
