Chapter 10. Information Technology
Section 10.4. Distributed Computing Services
10.4.1.1.2. Campus Standing Lists
Definition
Campus Standing Lists: Mailing lists set up by IT-DCS on behalf of faculty and staff and student organizations for use over an extended period of time. Uses include class, department, committee, or organization lists. This service is limited to University-related activities only. In general, these lists are voluntary, that is, the members have subscribed themselves or have given permission to be on the list roster.
General Information
Standing lists have an on-going function and must have all of the following:
- a purpose which is University-related.
- a list name which is representative of the purpose of the list and ends in -l (dash ell) to distinguish it as a list.
- an information file containing a brief description of the list's purpose.
To review the entire policy for e-mail standing lists, refer to the Central E-mail List Procedures Web site <http://www.it.mtu.edu/dcs/eml/eml-94.htm>.
To establish a new list, the requestor must:
- Have a valid mtu.edu e-mail address.
- Manage the list and maintain the list membership (subscribes and unsubscribes). Refer to Central E-mail List Procedures found on Web site <http://www.it.mtu.edu/dcs/eml/eml-94.htm> or call DCS at 7-1723.
- Be the owner of the mailing list or establish a different owner with DCS, if unable to manage the list.
- Monitor the list to ensure its proper use and rectify any problems that may occur. In the event of abuse or other problems notify DCS at 7-1723 as soon as possible.
Procedure
To send an e-mail message to a mailing list, do the following:
- Using any e-mail package, send a message with the mailing list address in the To: field.
Example:
TO: ourtopic-L@mtu.edu
SUBJECT: hello to everyone
Hello fellow list members.
NOTE: When replying to a mailing list message, be sure to check the To: field. Some lists are set up to send replies to only the original author of the message, while other lists will send replies to the entire mailing list. The value in the To: field of the reply will indicate where the reply will be sent. The default To: field can be changed to send a reply to whichever audience is desired to receive the reply.
All mailing list messages will appear in the e-mail inbox just like personal e-mail messages.
