Section 10.4. Distributed Computing Services
Electronic Mail and Messaging (E-mail): An electronic communications method used to send messages and documents to one or more people. This strategic service must be carefully managed to ensure prompt, private, consistent, and accurate delivery of electronic information.
The Universitys e-mail system is for the use of University-affiliated faculty, staff, and students. Central e-mail lists are to be used for University functions and in accordance with the purpose stated in their description. Refer to Central E-mail List procedures found on the DCS Web site at <http://www.it.mtu.edu/dcs/> for more information. Also, refer to the Board of Control Policy 3.13. Conflict of Interest, for use of Michigan Tech resources for activities other than for University purposes.
Abusing the campus e-mail system is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to: sending spam mail, pyramid and chain letters, spoofed-identity mail, and harassing mail. Attempting to connect to campus e-mail and related servers using methods not outlined in campus e-mail standards is prohibited. Refer to Email Abuse procedures found on the DCS Web site <http://www.it.mtu.edu/dcs/> for more information.
Unsolicited mass mailings to off-campus e-mail addresses are not allowed.
For large, on-campus, unsolicited mailings, written approval by the appropriate dean or director must be forwarded to the director of Distributed Computing Services before the message is sent. Refer to section 10.4.1.1.3. Ad Hoc Mailing Lists and Mass Mailings or procedures found on the DCS Web site <http:/www.it.mtu.edu/dcs/> for more information.
Student organizations are not permitted to initiate mass mailings on the University's e-mail system unless approved by the office of Student Affairs. The procedures are outlined in section E-mailing Mass Mailings by Recognized Student Organizations documented at the office of Students Affairs, or found on the DCS Web site <http://www.it.mtu.edu/dcs/>.
E-mail policies are derived from existing University and MichNet Acceptable Use policies. For more information refer to the DCS Web site <http://www.it.mtu.edu/dcs/>, or contact IT-Distributed Computing Services at 7-1726.
