It confers degrees.

In 1995-96, MTU conferred 81 associate, 1186 baccalaureate, 164 masters, and 50 doctoral degrees.

Its degree programs are compatible with the institution's mission and are based on recognized fields of study at the higher education level.

Consistent with our mission, 64% of our students are enrolled in engineering programs and 89% in engineering or science. MTU's degree programs are based on recognized fields of study in higher education, as reported through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, which are recognized higher education reporting structures at the state and federal level.

Its degrees are appropriately named, following practices common to institutions of higher education in terms of both length and content of the programs.

Degree offerings conform with the subject area nomenclature used by the National Center for Educations Statistics and found in the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) 1990. Associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degree programs conform in length and content with national norms. The minimum quantitative requirement for graduating with a bachelor's degree is 192 credit hours. Specific information about the requirements for each degree program is included in the undergraduate and graduate catalogs.

Its undergraduate degree programs include a coherent general education requirement consistent with the institution's mission and designed to ensure breadth of knowledge and to promote intellectual inquiry.

The foundation on which MTU's general education requirements are built is that the program provides graduates with the skills, knowledge, and intellectual habits to succeed in their personal and professional lives. Students are required to take 64 hours of general education in a wide variety of disciplines.

It has admissions policies and practices that are consistent with the institution’s mission and appropriate to its educational programs.

MTU operates under selective admissions criteria. The University admits only applicants who give definite evidence that they are qualified, through education, academic fitness, aptitudes, interests, and character.

It provides its students access to those learning resources and support services requisite for its degree programs.

Wherever instruction is offered the University provides electronic or physical access to library collections, computing facilities, and learning centers, as well as support services such as a counseling center, a health center, and a career center.

It has an external financial audit by a certified public accountant or a public audit agency at least every two years.

On an annual basis, external auditors prepare Audited Financial Statements which are presented to the Board of Control in public session.

The MTU Audited Financial Statements are public documents. They are available in the university library in addition to being available on the WWW. Paper copies of the reports are also distributed to approximately 33 financial institutions, legislators, government agencies, educational institutions, and corporations. Furthermore, a summary of the financial statements is included in the President's Annual Report which has a distribution list of 40,000.
