Employment Status. A state of employment either actively at work, on vacation, or sick leave.
Enrolled Student. A student taking classes for credit at Michigan Technological University.
Exempt Employee. An employee exempt from the overtime policies of the University due to the nature of the work, education requirements of the position and salary range. These employees are paid an annual salary and are not customarily eligible for overtime pay.
Non-Exempt Employee. An employee covered by the overtime policies of the University.
Full-Time Employee. An employee, either regular or temporary, who is normally scheduled to work forty (40) hours per week.
Full-Time Student. A student taking twelve or more credit hours at Michigan Technological University.
Graduate Student Assistant. A graduate student working under the supervision of a regular faculty member and is engaged in an educational program of teaching and/or research.
Graduate Student Intern. A person pursuing an advanced degree at Michigan Technological University or elsewhere, where teaching experience is required as part of the degree program, and who is teaching lower level courses with the guidance and supervision of a regular faculty member.
Non-Enrolled Student. A person who has been enrolled, is no longer taking courses, but has evidenced an intention to re-enroll by leaving a $50.00 enrollment fee on deposit with the University.
Part-Time Employee. An employee, either regular or temporary, who is normally scheduled to work less than forty (40) hours per week.
Part-Time Student. A student taking less than twelve credit hours of classes at Michigan Technological University.
Probationary Employee. A non-exempt employee, other than part-time or temporary, who is subject to a 90-day probationary period upon employment.
Regular Employee. An employee who fills an established position either full or part-time and who is not a temporary replacement.
Regular Rate of Pay. Refers to the biweekly rate of pay of the employee. To compute the regular rate of pay, divide the salaried amount by the number of weeks it is to be paid and multiply by 2 for the biweekly rate of pay.
Student Stipend. Part-time and temporary positions reserved for students as a part of a program to provide meaningful education experience and/or financial assistance.
Temporary Employee. An employee whose employment is either full or part-time, limited in duration and established for:
The length of employment should not exceed two (2) years for non-bargaining unit personnel, three (3) years for temporary faculty. Extensions require Vice President approval. Positions that need to be on a regular appointment must be posted and follow Affirmative Action procedures.
