19.5. IWR Advisory Committee

Advisory Committee for Institute of Wood Research

  1. Intent of Policy

    By Legislative Act 266 of 1947, the State of Michigan authorized and appropriated funds for the conduct of research by Michigan Technological University "in the industrial utilization and marketing of Michigan wood products in order to develop industry and further employment in the forest areas of the State of Michigan. . ."

    Section 2 of the Act reads: "The plans and results of said program shall be reviewed periodically by a non-salaried advisory committee appointed by the Board of Control of said college; said committee to include representatives of the several branches of the wood using industries.

    This policy is intended to provide for orderly and continuous implementation of Section 2 of the legislation, so as to obtain maximum benefits to the University and to the State from the research programs as conducted by the Institute of Wood Research (IWR).

  2. Advisory Committee Responsibilities and Objectives

    Within the intent of the legislation and the policy, the responsibilities and objectives of the Advisory Committee to IWR are:

    1. To encourage support of IWR's functions and objectives from all levels of the forest and wood products industries, the state executive and legislative branches, and the general public.

    2. To support the research programs of IWR through encouragement of industrially-sponsored research, industrial research grants and contributions of industrial equipment for utilization in the Institute's programs of research.

    3. To periodically review IWR progress.

    4. To counsel the Institute of Wood Research on its programs.

  3. Organization, Membership, and Terms of Service

    1. The Board of Control of Michigan Technological University will receive from the President recommendations of names of individuals for appointment to the Advisory Committee. Such appointments shall be in keeping with Legislative Act 266, 1947, and in accordance with this policy.

    2. Terms of appointments of members will be 3 years: All terms shall terminate on December 31 of the last year of appointment; however, a member may be reappointed for an indefinite number of terms.

    3. The Advisory Committee for IWR shall be composed of not less than 10 members and not more than 30 members. Membership shall be in accordance with the President's assessment of the number of members which can best forward the objectives of the Committee, of the Institute of Wood Research, of the University, and of the State of Michigan.

    4. The President of the University shall annually appoint from the committee's membership a Chairman and Vice Chairman. The Director of the Institute shall appoint an Executive Secretary who shall be a full-time member of the professional staff of the Institute.

    5. The Advisory Committee for IWR shall meet at Michigan Technological University at least twice during each calendar year. Such meetings shall be at the call of the Chairman who shall publish meeting dates in January of each calendar year.

    6. Official Minutes of Advisory Committee meetings shall be prepared by the Executive Secretary for distribution to all members and to the President of the University as soon as reasonably possible after such meetings have occurred. The Secretary of Michigan Technological University's Board of Control shall retain one copy of all such official Minutes.
