General Information
This area of Accounting Services coordinates the submission of various university tax filings. This area also monitors and promotes compliance with relevant Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and State of Michigan Regulations. Our responsibilities include:
- Nonresident Alien Tax Information-Various IRS tax forms and tax treaty information
- Preparation and submission of MTU’s Tax Form 990T -Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT)
- Preparation and issuance of Form1099-MISC - This may include payments made for independent contractors, medical payments, attorney fees, royalties, rents, prizes and awards.
- Preparation and issuance of Form1042 and 1042-S - This may include payments made to international independent contractors, visiting scholars, and students, and applicable federal tax withheld.
- Preparation and submission of Form5500 - Employee benefits
- Preparation and submission of IPEDS- MTU Financial data reporting
- Determine taxability of moving reimbursements, employee assistance and TRIP benefits.
- Consultant on preparation and issuance of Form 1098-T
- Conduct tax research as necessary and advise various departments on the tax consequences of University transactions.
- Administer federal and state regulations, with university policies and procedures, to ensure tax compliance in all tax matters applicable to MTU.
- Presentation of various tax seminars to MTU community.

Consult your local tax advisor or the IRS for individual tax matters. This area can not act as a representative for an individual in tax issues with the IRS.
The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program is available for domestic
and resident alien individuals for assistance in completion of the tax returns.
