Property: Lost, Found, Abandoned
Disposition of Lost or Abandoned Property
The University will dispose of lost or abandoned property in accordance with State law (MCLA 434.21 – 29).
Items of Value
The Public Safety Office or any other designated area holding lost or abandoned property will attempt to contact the legal owner of the items (if known), and upon receiving proof of ownership release such property to the owner.
Property will be held for 90 days prior to disposal.
Abandoned vehicles or bicycles are reported to the Public Safety Office.
Unknown substances, liquids, lubricants, medicines, fuels, contraband, or hazardous materials are reported to the Occupational Safety and Health and the Public Safety Office.
Cash or other instruments of currency and property of major value are reported to the Public Safety Office.
Items - No Value
Property with no fair market value or worth, junk, or perishable property that is subject to deterioration or spoilage or found otherwise unsuitable to keep in storage, may be disposed of upon receipt.
Disposal
After 90 days, unclaimed property which is still of use will be donated to local recognized charities as defined in MCLA, Section 400.272 of the Michigan Compiled Law.

A general list of items will be forwarded to the Accounting Services Office prior to donation to charity. The list will include the following information:
Date and Location Found, Item Description, Contact Record if applicable, Charity Name
