If a person feels that his or her treatment has been unfairly discriminatory, he or she is encouraged to file a complaint. The following procedures are intended to be used in any case of alleged harassment and or discriminatory actions on the basis of a person’s race, religion, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, height, weight, marital status, veteran status, disability, etc. Violations of state and federal law and the policies could lead to discipline and possible dismissal.
Any complaints of such behaviors should be reported to a supervisor, department head/chair, or the AAO located in the Affirmative Programs Office (7-3310). Any person named in a complaint should contact the Affirmative Action Officer (AAO) as above.
Nothing in Michigan Tech's policy will prevent persons involved from pursuing any legal remedy which might be available to them.
A complaint may be brought to the Affirmative Action Officer (AAO). The person who brings forward the claim is referred to as the "complainant." The AAO will discuss the complaint with the complainant and may explore effective options for an early informal resolution at the most local level.
If the complaint is brought forward as a charge by submission in writing, the accused will be informed of the allegations and may choose to respond verbally or in writing. This person is called the "respondent." The AAO will coordinate time lines for progress updates and results on the case as needed.
The Administration may determine that corrective action needs to be taken at any point in this process, regardless of agreement of all the parties.
All complaints are given serious consideration. Informal resolutions should be explored first. The informal process serves to formulate appropriate resolutions at the most local level. Formal treatment may be specifically requested by either party or the AAO in a written notice at any time.
